What is a hotel booking engine? A practical guide

A hotel booking engine is the software on a hotel’s own website that lets guests check availability, choose a room and rate, and pay — without an online travel agency in between. The booking goes straight to the hotel, along with the guest’s contact details.

What a booking engine does

• Shows live availability and prices for each room and rate plan
• Applies promotions, booking codes and member rates
• Calculates taxes and fees and shows the total
• Takes payment, or a card guarantee, or lets the guest pay at the property
• Sends confirmations and passes the booking to your PMS and channel manager

What to look for

Clear prices. Guests leave when the price changes at checkout. Look for an engine that shows the full price — including local taxes and fees — from the first page.

Speed on mobile. Most hotel searches start on a phone. The engine should load fast and keep the total visible as guests choose rooms.
