Rate parity explained for hotels

What rate parity means, why OTAs care about it, and how hotels can still give guests a reason to book direct.

Rate parity means offering the same room at the same price on every public channel. Many OTA contracts have included parity clauses, and the rules differ between countries and contracts.

Why it matters

If your website is more expensive than an OTA, guests book on the OTA. If it is cheaper, the OTA may object under your contract. Always check your own agreements.

Ways hotels make direct more attractive

  • Member rates shown to signed-in guests — see loyalty
  • Added value such as breakfast or late check-out
  • Direct-only offers on your own website — see Price Match
  • Booking codes for corporates and groups — see promotions

Monitor, don’t guess

Knowing what the OTAs are showing for each night is the first step. Price Match scans OTA prices for the nights ahead and shows where you stand.
